During the winter of 2011, I was involved with a non-profit organization named Iridescent Learning. There are various programs from here but the one I was a part of was the High School Explainers program. I learned many exciting projects that involve engineering all the while teaching younger students as a mentor. I would go to the Iridescent Studio where the leaders (Amy Wood and Jenna Blanton) provided new lessons each week. It was a very fun experience and I learned so many new tricks engineering and science-related. Additionally, this program made me more interested in studying technology and engineering in the future.
I have learned to be personally and socially responsible by showing up on time to the studio and communicating well to my peers and instructors. I learned to be technologically literate by looking up this website and literally applying to the program. I found what I wanted to do for fall 2011 and I went to get what I wanted. Which brings me to what knowledge I also gained which is strive for what I want and go for it. This component is very important because there are people willing to give us opportunities, we just need to find those people ad be persistent.
In addition, I did such a good job in the fall, that Amy Wood, the director of Iridescent, decided to bring me back and participate in a paid internship in the summer of 2012. The summer program included more hours, but we never left the vision of getting students excited about science and engineering.
